First president of Trinity College (1824-1831) in Hartford. He entered the College of Rhode Island (now Brown University) in 1800; switched to Union College in 1802 and graduated in 1804. When Rev. Eliphalet Nott became president, Brownell was appointed tutor in Latin and Greek.
