This article surveys the theory of the relationship between economic interdependence and political conflict. Does economic interdependence increase or decrease the probability of war among states? Many authors examine the question of whether economic interdependence constrains or motivates interstate conflict. While liberals affirm economic interdependence produces common interests among nations and fosters cooperative political relations, realists assert that rather than fostering cooperation, increased interdependence generates political discord.
