Immigration through the eyes of a child : a children\u27s book fostering a sense of belonging

A children\u27s book bringing in the children\u27s views on immigration through personal experience or interaction with peers. A book in which they may relate to or learn from, will benefit them in learning what an immigrant goes through. Touches base with four specific themes: Language, Home vs. School, Socialization, and deportation. These themes helps to foster immigrant children giving them the sense of belonging by having a book that relates to them, and allowing the book to express who these children are. Community partner\u27s where Starlight Elementary School, engaging in listening to fourth grade student\u27s personal experiences, and working with the Watsonville Youth Center. A book was created, having two stories within one. Two main characters experiencing different migration processes. Book was read to youth, given a questionnaire which was based how they felt the book related to them. We learned that there needs to be more children\u27s books that touch base on children\u27s lives and experiences. If these types of books are created, more children from different cultures that come to the United States will not only feel the sense of belonging, but feel that someone understands who they are
