Stop the homework, stop the madness the negative effects of homework on elementary students

As the educational system in America continues to put more emphasis on student and school achievement, it is important to take a look at the effects of current homework practices in America. Although homework expectations are higher than ever, American students are still falling short in achievement and the negative effects continue to mount. This research examines the impact of homework using previous studies, along with personal interaction with local elementary school educators and students in the classroom. Surveys were collected from parents and students on the effects of homework. In addition, a study was performed in a local classroom comparing assessment results of teacher lead lessons with homework and without. The results indicate that homework directly affects stress levels and no clear correlation between homework and student academic achievement was evident
