This research paper explored the potential for empowering elementary school students by raising self-efficacy levels in order to increase academic achievement. The role of self-efficacy in students’ achievement was explored through a scholarly literature review, and through interviews with teachers in a low socioeconomic community. Research indicates that students with higher self-efficacy tend to have higher academic achievement. In order to increase self-efficacy in elementary school students, a university partnership mentor program was implemented to train California State University Monterey Bay student service learners to foster self-efficacy and raise students’ views about their own capabilities
