Tulisan ini mencoba untuk membandingkan kontroversi sejarah yang terjadi di Jepang dan di Indonesia. Meskipun kedua negara ini memiliki masalah yang sama dalam kaitannya dengan kontroversi penulisan dan pengajaran sejarah, namun ada beberapa aspek yang berbeda. Kontroversi sejarah Jepang terkait dengan negara-negara tentangga khusunya Korea dan Cina dalam kaitannya dengan kekejaman-kekejaman Jepang selama Perang Dunia, sedangkan kontroversi sejarah dan pembelajaran sejarah di Indonesia terkait dengan masalah internal bangsa khususnya yang berhubungan dengan peristiwa Gerakan 3 September tahun 1965.
