The cultural development of Lower Danube area was felt after 1840, when in Romania thefirst societies intended to promote the culture among the masses, to transform it into an affordablecommodity. The first attempt to popularize the literature occurred in Galati, in 1851, when it waspublished a little magazine, Muzeu literaru. The political and linguistic problems of the time made itdifficult the mission of popularizing the culture, so one may speak of cultural, literary journals afterthe merging of two Principalities in 1859.
