Automobiles can be seen in the parking lot beside Massasoit Hall.On September 22, 1926 the cornerstone of the International YMCA College's (now Springfield College) new men’s dormitory, Alumni Hall, was laid. Just one year after the cornerstone was laid, Alumni Hall was completed. The building, though, was not formally dedicated until June 15, 1930 when all the funds for the building were officially received. In October of 1944, Alumni Hall, in conjunction with the Administration building, was used as a U.S. Navy Convalescent Hospital. The majority of the patients were housed in Alumni Hall, with one wing equipped for bed cases and the rest converted into hospital rooms for 2-4 men. Today, with the exception of necessary renovations, Alumni Hall remains largely unchanged. Massasoit Hall was completed and opened for residents in September 1959. At the time it was built, the dormitory remained undedicated and simply known as “South Hall” because of its location just south of Alumni Hall. The dormitory was the first of a tri-pod of Resident Halls built between 1955 and 1960. On April 22nd, 1961, the Hall was to be named Dr. Allen Reed Hall, but on June 10th 1961, the college decided that the last dorm in the cultivation of this tri-pod should be named after the College’s founder, and so it was decided that South Hall be named Massasoit Hall, after the lake that it sits on. Massasoit Hall originally functioned as an all-male dormitory, but in 1969 it was the first dormitory to change from a single sex hall to a co-educational dormitory. Separate floors were designated for men and women. Today Massasoit Hall houses freshmen students retaining its new and modern spirit with the many new first years residing in it each fall.On the back of the photograph there is a Kodak stamp says "APR 81", which probably means that the photograph was processed in April 1981. There is also a handwriting of "3/81", which could mean March 1981. The date of creation of this photograph is assumed based on these information
