New Oral Antithrombotic Drugs

New oral antithrombotic drugs are currently used for several indications, but mostly for the long-term treatment or prevention of thromboembolic disease in situations such as high-risk orthopedic surgery, deep vein thrombosis and myocardial infarction. They are also used in atrial fibrillation for the prevention of stroke. This family of drugs includes anti-platelet agents, eg. ticlopidine and clopidogrel, antithrombin agents, eg. ximelagatran and several others with various mechanisms of action.
