Ball, Jr., began working with the YMCA in Yonkers, New York before he enrolled at the YMCA Training School at Springfield, Mass. From 1887 to 1889 Ball was the Assistant Secretary at the YMCA facility in Yonkers. In 1891, while a Springfield Colleg student, W. H. Ball served as one of the editors of The Triangle and he was part of Stagg’s eleven, the Springfield College’s 1890 football team. After completion of the program at Springfield, Ball took the position of Physical Director at the YMCA in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and served there from 1892 until 1901.
