International YMCA College War Work courses, 1917

A poster of the War Work courses offered by the International YMCA College, now Springfield College, in 1917. There are three courses offered at different times, the Eighth course from April 2 to April 27, the Ninth course from May 6 to June 1 and the Tenth course from July 1 to July 27. The course offered training for secretaries and physical directors for work in army camps. Some of the instruction was given in French to provide the necessary language skills to students for work with French soldiers. The poster shows, on the left, a portrait photograph of Arthur Rudman, director of the Army work course.Mr. Rudman, after four months’ work near the front returned to take charge of instruction in army camp methods. Mr. Rudman had eight years of experience in the Philippines and on the Mexican Border. He also authored the book “The American Red Triangle Handbook”, a textbook on army camp methods. Another photograph on the right of the poster depicts the service flags, including a caption which states that two hundred Springfield men were serving in the Army and 490 in army YMCA work at that time. Finally a photograph in the bottom depicts the Red Triangle Hut at the US Armory located a few minutes’ walk from the College Campus.This is not the original digital file created for the IMLS Grant.
