This photograph shows the International YMCA Training School’s (now known as Springfield College) lawn hockey team from 1901. The members of the lawn hockey team shown here are [standing row, L to R] James A. Lawrence (class of 1901), Albert L. Cross (class of 1901), Jack E. Sullivan (class of 1902), Ralph L. Cheney (class of 1901), John D. Stehman (class of 1901), George Baird Affleck (class of 1901), Philip L. Gillett (class of 1901), [kneeling, center] Fred Metts (class of 1903), [seated, L to R] Clarence A. McLaughlin (class of 1901), Harry W. Merrill (class of 1903) (reclining), Joseph Sawyer (class of 1901), Edward S. Elliott (class of 1904), and David A. C. Pinkney (class of 1901). This image was taken by Thomas M. Brainard, who graduated from the International YMCA Training School in 1900. Dr. McCurdy introduced lawn hockey to the International YMCA Training School in the fall of 1896, and after a season of playing they adopted the English rules. According to M. I. Foss, who graduated from the International YMCA Training school in 1899, they were the first school in the country to play English Lawn Hockey.Image also available as lantern slide
