Matthew Joseph portrait

This is a portrait of Springfield College alumnus Dr.Matthew P. Joseph. Dr. Joseph earned his BS from the Forman Christian College (1925) in Lahore, India, and his B.P.E (1931) and M.Ed. (1932) from the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. After graduation, he returned to India to work as the director of physical education at the YMCA College of Physical Education in Chennai, India. The YMCA College of Physical Education was directed by Harry C. Buck, another Springfield College alumnus. Dr. Joseph remained in this position until 1938, when he became the principal of the Training Institute for Physical Education in Mumbai, India. In 1952, he was asked by UNESCO to direct an International Training Center for Youth Leaders for South Asia and the Pacific. In 1958, Dr. Joseph became the principal of the Lakshmibai College of Physical Education in Gwalior, India. Springfield College awarded him an honorary doctorate in Humanics in 1964. In 1967, he retired. After retiring, Dr. Joseph settled in his original home community and helped revive a local YMCA. He died on June 23, 1999
