Clarence E. Rayburn portrait

This is a portrait of Springfield College alumnus Clarence E. Rayburn, class of 1925.Rayburn spent his first two years of high school in Brooklyn, Iowa. After taking a year off, he finished high school in Whittier, California. Rayburn then spent two tears in the army, where he served overseas. In 1923, he earned his BA from Whittier College, and in 1925 he earned his B.P.E. from Springfield College. After graduating from Springfield, Rayburn served as the director of physical education at a YMCA in Santiago, Chile. During this time, he introduced volleyball and basketball to Chileans and coached the national track team to victory in the 1926 South American Olympia. After three years, Rayburn moved back to the United States and became the physical director at the brand-new Hannan Memorial YMCA in Detroit, Michigan. The following year, he was hired as the physical education director at Detroit University School. In the summer of 1931, Rayburn moved to the west coast and earned his teachers certificate at the University of Southern California. He spent the next two years as a high school substitute before serving as the director of playgrounds for the Rowan School in Los Angeles. After eight months, he began serving as the education advisor for local CCC Camps. In 1935, he took the position of general secretary at a YMCA in Ellensburg, Washington. The following year, he took the same position at a YMCA in Wenatohee, Washington. On June 1, 1940, he resigned
