Jacob's Pillow Group

This photograph shows one man and five women standing outside at the Jacob's Pillow Summer School. According to notes on the back, second from the left is Jackie Upshaw, second from the right is Genie Dozier, and on the far right is Ruth Evans.Eugenie L. Dozier (1900-1996) was a dance instructor and physical education professor at Springfield College. A lifelong dancer, she was affiliated with the famed Ted Shawn Dance Company at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and School in Becket during her summers. She was one of the first women admitted as a student to Jacob’s Pillow. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Dozier was a 1927 graduate of the Agnes School College in Decatur. She received a master’s degree from Columbia University, a diploma from the Atlanta Conservatory of Music, and a master’s degree from Springfield College in 1954. In 1957, she began teaching physical education at Springfield College, where she remained until her retirement in 1969. Dr. Ruth M. Evans was the first chairman of the women's physical education department at Springfield College from 1952 to 1962
