This lantern slide shows a large group of International YMCA College (now Springfield College) students enjoying free cider and doughnuts during a respite from the hard work. In the foreground is a cart used to haul in sand. This slide was taken sometime during November 1916, when the International YMCA College students were given three days off from classes to participate in Work Days.During this time, the students used sand to grade land as part of a construction project adjacent to Pratt Field. Grading refers to the engineering and construction work necessary to ensure a level base (or one with a specified slope). Teams were hired to deliver sand, and the students worked in units of twelve.
