Henry S. Lee Portrait (c. 1891)

This lantern slide is a portrait of the International Y.M.C.A. Training School (now known as Springfield College) president Henry S. Lee from 1891.The school’s second and last part-time president, Henry S. Lee (1834-1902) served from 1891 to 1893. He along with David Allen Reed originally founded the school in 1885 (originally called the School for Christian Workers). He served as Treasurer of the Springfield Institute for Savings, and then as President from 1898 until his death. He was also a director in the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, in the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, in the Fire and Marine Insurance Company, and in the Chicopee National Bank. A biographical sketch of Lee appeared in the March 19, 1902 issue of the Springfield Republican. Lee died of a stroke on March 29, 1902.A facsimile of this image was found with an SC number (SC21220) and a note saying that it was scanned from a glass negative. However, no glass negative can be found and the facsimile is identical to the lantern slide. We do not know whether the facsimile was made from the lantern slide or from a glass negative that is now missing. The SC file was not large enough to justify keeping and was discarded in January 2014.
