Sixth Annual Report for the International YMCA Training School (June 10, 1891)

The Sixth Annual Report of the International Young Men’s Christian Association Training School, now Springfield College, 1890-1891, is divided into eighteen sections: Action of the International Convention regarding the School; Contribution of the School to the force of General Secretaries employed by Associations; Contribution of the School to the force of Physical Directors employed by Associations; Donations to the Library; Financial Budget for Year ending June 1, 1892; Formation of Alumni Association; Forms of Bequest, Endowment and Perpetual Loan Fund; New Courses of Instruction; New Grounds and Building Plans; Newly Elected Officers; Report of the President, Rev. David Allen Reed; Report of the Superintendent of the Secretarial Department, J.T. Bowne; Report of the Superintendent of the Physical Department, Luther Gulick, M.D.; Report of the Secretary, Oliver C. Morse; Report of the Treasurer; Subscriptions to old debt for current expenses; View of Lake Front from New Grounds; and Views of New Athletic Grounds. This is the first report of the school after the YMCA Training School split from the School of Christian Workers. The document announces the resignation of the President of the Trustees of the School, Rev. David Allen Reed. His position was filled by Henry S. Lee. David Allen Reed’s President’s Report briefly covers the incorporation of the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School, the school’s forty-six students, the abolishment of examinations (instead ranking students on their daily recitations), instructors, the success of their first football team, summer schools, new courses, the first issue of “The Triangle,” the adoption of the triangle as the school’s emblem and the scripture passage Eph. 4:13 as its motto, and the YMCA’s International Convention at Kansas City (a major subject of which was the recognition of training schools’ need for the leadership of the Associations). Reed then describes the College’s purchase of the Lake Massasoit property, the present location of Springfield College, the death of the trustee Henry H. Webster, and his own unfulfilled goal of visiting all colleges in New England. Finally, Reed formally announces his resignation. The Report of the Secretarial Department, written by Jacob Titus Bowne (1847-1925), covers student graduation rates, his hopes that the Trustees will focus on building a library of religious texts, and the growing demand for and appreciation of secretaries in the workforce. In Luther Halsey Gulick’s (1865-1918) Report of the Physical Department, he describes the growing school spirit and unity embraced by the student body, the completion of an index on their Library of Physical Education, and the summer school. The final report, written by Secretary Oliver Cromwell Morse (1847-1922), lists the donors who made the purchase of new ground possible. He then describes the school’s very first alumni association meeting and consequent formal class reunion. The final pages are a detailed budget and expenditures document.
