McCurdy Natatorium, 1919

A photograph of the south end of McCurdy Natatorium.The pool, a part of Judd Gymnasia, the oldest building on Springfield College's present campus, was completed in April of 1913. It was 24 x 60 feet and 1 inch long so, according to McCurdy, there could be no dispute over swimming records. A gift of Standard Oil President Herbert Pratt, who requested the pool be named after physical education department head Dr. McCurdy, cost $23,000 to build. It was closed on March 18, 1968 and the swimming pool was replaced by Linkletter Natatorium. The Natatorium was remodeled and has served as a dance studio, weight room, the college bookstore and finally, in the spring of 2011, as the Springfield College History Museum which also includes the YMCA Hall of Fame.A stamp on the back indicates the picture is from Oct 14, 1919; Series were added to this collection, changing the file name.
