This thesis is about naval technological transfer, in the years 1830-40 between the United States and the Ottoman Empire within the context of globalization of technology. Despite the vast amount of research on technological transfers among the Western countries, little is known about the technological transfer that brought steam power to the Ottoman Empire\u27s navy. The Empire\u27s experience with Henry Eckford, who was an American shipwright, will serve as a case study in understanding the naval reformation of the Empire, and in a wider context, the intercultural exchange and connection between the Empire and the United States.
