Psychology and cancer

La enfermedad cancerosa siempre ha ido acompañada de repercusiones psicológicas. Los factores psicológicos relacionados con el cáncer son estudiados por la Psicooncología. La investigación en psicooncología es fundamental para propiciar su desarrollo. Para poder realizar estudios en este campo con garantías científicas, es necesario incluir un diagnóstico fiable y cuantificado que incluya la descripción del lugar anatómico del tumor primario, el tipo histológico del tumor, los lugares de las metástasis y cuantos datos permitan caracterizar el grado de desarrollo alcanzado por la enfermedad. En este trabajo se describe la definición y objetivos que persigue la Psicooncología, los tipos de prevención, la importancia de la evaluación psicológica, la intervención psicosocial del paciente con cáncer para el control de náuseas y vómitos, manejo psicológico del dolor y de ansiedad y depresión, y la metodología de investigación en esta área.Cancer disease has always being accompanied by psychological repercussions. These psychological factors are studied by the psychoonchology. Research in psychoonchology is fundamental for its own development. In order to be able to make studies in this field with scientific guarantees, is necessary to include a solid and quantified diagnostic that includes a description of the anatomical location of the primary tumor, its histological type, the sites of metastasis, and any other data that help to characterize the degree of development reached by the disease. This work presents the definition and aims of the psychooonchology, types of prevention, relevance of psychological assessment, psychosocial intervention for the control of nausea and vomiting, psychological management of pain, anxiety, and depression, and research methodology used in this area
