La enfermedad cancerosa siempre ha ido acompañada de repercusiones psicológicas. Los factores psicológicos relacionados con el cáncer son estudiados por la Psicooncología. La investigación en psicooncología es fundamental para propiciar su desarrollo. Para poder realizar estudios en este campo con garantías científicas, es necesario incluir un diagnóstico fiable y cuantificado que incluya la descripción del lugar anatómico del tumor primario, el tipo histológico del tumor, los lugares de las metástasis y cuantos datos permitan caracterizar el grado de desarrollo alcanzado por la enfermedad.
