The Maine Forest Service (MFS) has conducted random, statewide monitoring of BMPs on timber harvesting operations since 2000. The objective of this ongoing effort is to assess the use and effectiveness of BMPs in Maine. Approximately 5,000 timber harvests notifications are filed in Maine each year; samples were drawn from these notifications. This report presents an analysis of data collected on 101 timber harvests during 2013. Originally 106 harvest sites were selected, but due to staffing shortages five sites were not visited, and these were dropped from the sample. MFS continues this monitoring effort as a part of regular field activities and expects to generate subsequent biannual reports
