Adult learners are a unique student population at high-risk for academic underachievement and dropping out. An online survey was designed to assess preferred pedagogical techniques of as well as to understand perceived barriers that may influence quality of academic learning. Results show a strong preference for classroom discussion, lecture based presentations, and internship opportunities as preferred pedagogical approaches. The lack of flexibility in course offerings, balancing work/life demands, and chronological age were identified as barriers by these students. By better understanding this group, we can be more proactive in our efforts to maximize retention and foster an engaged learning environment
