For a variety of reasons a large number of shapes of surfactant aggregates are postulated in the literature. a thermomechanical evaluation of these shapes has been attempted here. It is well known that the details of the equations describing the thermodynamics and mechanics of interfaces change with the choice of the location of the interface, yet these must all be equivalent. the constraints thus required shed light on cylindrical micelles and structural phase inversions. the need for studying fluctuations in such systems is also made obvious. © 1989
