A close look at the personal endings of IE verbs reveals a surprising degree of uncertainty concerning their origin and development. In spite of an extensive literature on these endings by the beginning of this century, Brugmann (1967: 589) was led to comment that \u27the origin of the PIE personal endings...is just as difficult (\u27schwierig\u27) as the PIE case endings’.
