Considerable effort has been made to account for the correlation effect in the equation for solid state diffusion, and means have been developed to evaluate the correlation factor (f) either by calculation or experimentally. In many cases the diffusion mechanism can be identified by comparing the experimental f value with the theoretical f value calculated for a specific mechanism from the known lattice geometry
