Cement-bonded castable refractories are used in several applications, e. g. the manufacture of NH3 and coal gasification, where they are exposed to steam and CO. The chemical reactions and mechanical properties for the dense, high alumina castable were investigated in detail. The extent of the reaction of the cement-bond phases with the same saturated steam-CO atmosphere was determined quantitatively by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as a function of exposure time and temperature to which the castable was fired before exposure
