La innovación es un componente clave de las ventajas competitivas de las empresas. El objetivo del presente artículo es probar si la inversión en innovación influye en la productividad de pequeñas y medianas empresas. La relación innovación-competitividad se estudió en una muestra amplia de empresas en México. Se aplicó un análisis de regresión en dos etapas para evitar estimadores inconsistentes. Primero, se establecieron los determinantes de la innovación y, después, se estimó el impacto de la innovación sobre la productividad. Se halló un vínculo positivo entre innovación y productividad en diversos sectores manufactureros y no manufactureros.
