The University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) has conducted a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program in micro mechatronics and smart structures during the past four years. The goal of this program was to provide a multidisciplinary, collaborative project-based research with hands-on experience for the benefit of undergraduate students. An important component of this program was the collaboration with universities in Puerto Rico. The interaction of the students and faculty between the mainland US and Puerto Rico resulted not only in an excellent technical collaboration but a cultural integration as well
