The use of nondestructive testing (NDT) for corrosion under paint was discussed. NDT techniques can be applied to detecting two general categories of corrosion which include deep sensing of substrate backside and multiple layer corrosion in inaccessible areas such as bulkheads and shallow sensing of substrate surface corrosion under paint. Nine NDT system manufacturers were contacted and considered for participation in a screening test to assess the capability of each system perform NDT for corrosion under paint. The results show the thermal wave imaging system as the technology having the best current capabilities for the detection and imaging of corrosion under coating
