Muck samples from nine different tunnels bored by mechanical tunneling machines were analyzed in the laboratory for size consist, and the variation in the angle of internal friction with changes in size consist. Drained triaxial tests were used in these analyses. Variations in the angle of internal friction with changes in individual particle sizes, overall size consist, and saturatiion fluids were studied. Test results indicate a decrease in the angle of internal friction with an increase in individual particle size, and with the use of some saturation fluids. Results also reveal an increase in the angle of internal friction with an increase in overall size consist for noncohesive materials
