Turbulence characteristics in free mixing were analyzed using the two-equation ?-? model and the Reynolds-stress model. The computed results were compared with available experimental data for free mixing between two parallel streams with initial boundary layers at two different velocity ratios. The time-averaged velocities were in good agreement with both models. However, only the Reynolds-stress model gives good agreement for shear stress, and turbulent kinetic energy in the near-wake region. The empirical relation, that turbulent shear stress is proportional to the velocity gradient by an eddy viscosity, is not adequate in the near wake region
