Pengolahan Buah Bintaro sebagai Sumber Bioetanol dan Karbon Aktif

Cerbera odollam is a street plant without economic value. It can grow in extreme environment and easily cultivated in Indonesia. The peeled fruit will change its color into brown which indicates glucose content. It shows that the fruit can be used as a source to produce bioethanol. The fruit also contains lignin which can be used as a source in producing activated carbon. The purposes of this research are to study the influence of enzyme dilution, the optimum time, and the optimum substrate concentration of Cerbera odollam enzyme hydrolysis. The benefits of this research are to give knowledge about enzyme hydrolysis process of Cerbera odollam and an alternative utilization of Cerbera odollam as a prospective source in producing bioethanol and activated carbon. The research method is performing a large scale enzyme hydrolysis of 5 g/L and 100 g/L substrate. Liquid hydrolyzate is fermented to produce bioethanol and the solid is processed into activated carbon. Enzyme hydrolysis and ethanol production from 100 g/L substrate is more economical than 5 g/L for higher glucose production and fewer enzymes usage. However, activated carbon adsorption of the 5 g/L substrate is better than 100 g/L substrate. Keywords: bioethanol, Cerbera odollam, enzym hydrolysis, activated carbon, lignin, cellulos
