Current technology for wall, ceiling or ground movement monitoring in a mining excavation is accomplished by stretching a device across tunnel openings, which inherently blocks passageways. By utilizing simple image processing techniques, sub-millimeter movement of objects can be monitored using light sources such as lasers, which will not impede traffic through excavation tunnels --Abstract, page iii
