Today, over 40% of the U.S. coal is mined using underground mining method. Mining methods used underground has also been slowly chaning over the years too, which has presented challenges in ventilation. This paper presents the current status of ventilation practices in U.S. underground coal mines. It also discusses current regulations as pertaining to underground coal and the proposed regulations on diesel-powered equipment to enhance the health and safety for underground coal miners
