Microstructures observed in Al-Ge, Al-Ni and Al-Be are described. These microstructures are discussed in terms of metastable features of the equilibrium phase diagram. In each case, the importance of undercooling in the liquid in determining the phases which form and their distribution in the microstructure is emphasized
