Maltrato infantil: Características en la región de Oshakati. Namibia 2009

An observational- descriptive- retrospective study was carried out in the Oshakati Hospital from January - December of 2009, with the aim of determining the characteristics of child abuse up to 15 years old. This data was obtained through a survey designed for the family members, doctors and children belonging to the community under study. The universe was formed by 390 children that came to the hospital and the sample consisted on the detected cases (146). The male sex prevailed and the type of physical abuse was the nutritional disorders, besides these children were forced to leave school and do housework, and the sexual abuse was also an important aspect. The majority of the children wished that the family members were different. A similar amount felt themselves as important parts of their families. We suggest then to spread out the results of this investigation to the health agents and to perform studies of greater complexity in order to improve this topic.Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo, retrospectivo en el Hospital de Oshakati durante el período enero - diciembre de 2009, con el objetivo de determinar las características de los niños que son maltratados desde su infancia hasta 15 años de edad, datos que se obtuvieron mediante una encuesta diseñada, dirigida a familiares, niños y médicos de las comunidades pertenecientes a la región objeto de estudio. El universo de estudio quedó constituido por 390 niños que acudieron al hospital y la muestra son todos los casos detectados (146). Predominó el sexo masculino, el tipo de maltrato físico encontrado fueron los trastornos nutricionales; además fueron obligados a abandonar la escuela para realizar labores domésticas; en el sexual, los tocamientos fueron un aspecto importante; la mayoría de los niños deseaban que sus familias fueran diferentes, una proporción bastante similar se sentían parte importante de su familia y señalaron recibir maltrato. Sugerimos divulgar los resultados a los gestores en salud y realizar estudios de mayor complejidad para profundizar en esta temática
