This paper addresses the main points inherent knowledge of surveying instruments today, as well as its evolution in history and goals. The work was carried out on the basis of Chapters I and II of the book Topografia Geral, which was held a didactic review for teaching students , teachers, researchers and surveying professionals. The book is a clear and concise language of the main elements that make up the surveying: instruments and accessories.
