This paper argues that student participation is an important component of undergraduate courses yet suffers conceptually from a narrow definition and operationally from limited student engagement and assessment challenges. The paper provides a holistic student-informed assessment rubric for student participation in undergraduate courses to address these shortcomings. It especially advocates for active course participation, rather than only in-class participation, and the value of student perspectives in assessment measures.
