Unsettling the Future by Uncovering the Past: Decolonizing Academic Libraries and Librarianship

Canada is at an interesting point in its history, where the atrocious assimilation practices that were in place until the mid-1990s are being acknowledged in the hopes for a better relationship between Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Both the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, and the Canadian Federation of Library Associations/Federation Canadienne des Associations de Bibliotheques (CFLA/FCAB)’s report from its Truth and Reconciliation Committee (n.d.) recognize the significant role of education needed to address changes. Where do academic libraries fit into this? I first discuss the colonial history of libraries, as extensions of education institutions, followed by a look at how library and information science (LIS) curriculum falls short in preparing students for working with Indigenous peoples and Indigenous resources. Finally, I examine how libraries can decolonize their services. Canadian academic library staff cannot continue to be so ill-equipped to serve Indigenous students and faculty.Le Canada se trouve à un moment intéressant de son histoire, où les pratiques atroces d’assimilation qui existaient jusqu’au milieu des années 1990 sont reconnues dans l’espoir d’une meilleure relation entre les peuples autochtones et non autochtones du Canada. Le rapport de la Commission de vérité et réconciliation et celui du Comité sur la vérité et la réconciliation de la Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (s.d.) reconnaissent tous deux le rôle important que doit jouer l’éducation pour traiter des changements. Comment les bibliothèques universitaires peuvent-elles se positionner? Je présente d’abord l’histoire coloniale des bibliothèques, en tant qu’extension d’établissements d’enseignement, puis j’examine comment les programmes de bibliothéconomie et de sciences de l’information ne préparent pas les étudiants à travailler avec les peuples autochtones et des ressources autochtones. Enfin, j’examine comment les bibliothèques peuvent décoloniser leurs services. Le personnel des bibliothèques universitaires canadiennes ne peut plus être aussi mal outillé pour servir les étudiants et les  professeurs autochtones
