The increased consumption of coal by thermal power station lead to ecological and environmental misbalance in the mining sector and to voluminous emission of particulate matters, toxic volatiles and oxides and sulphur, nitrogen and more importantly, the emission of CO2 which has become a matter of global concern. The Kyoto protocol demands reduction of CO2 emission. In terms of the amount of CO2 produced per unit electricity generated, coal is less efficient than either oil or gas.
