Next generation internet protocol IPv6 provides great solution to the problems associated with IPv4. large address space of IPv6 solves the problem of lack of IP addresses which was a major concern with the enormous growth of the internet. The new version of protocol provides innumerable benefits like auto configuration, simple header, multicasting, quality of service, etc. which improve the overall functionality of IPv6. In the present study, the benefits of IPv6 on IPv6 on IPv 4 have been discussed in detail including he lacuna of Ipv6 in present day scenaro. The future challenges have also been identified during the implemntation of IPv
