This is the first part of the work on systematic study of corrosion in Indian coal mines. In the first instance factors like temperature, humidity and characteristic of pit-waters have been studied and their respective roles in the field of corrosion have been discussed making reference to study made by previous workers on these lines. Occurance and disposal of acid mine water pose a special problem. In acid mien waters presence of sulpur bacteria has often been traced. Formation of acid by the natural oxidation of sulphur is slow. But the presence of sulphur oxidizing bacteria enhances the rate of formation of sulphuric acid
