Low temperature carbonization (l.t.c.) studies were carried out on Argada, and Kuju coals from Bokaro-Ramgarh-Karanpura (B.R.K.) area, Bihar. The carbonization tests were performed in (i) the Gray-King Assay apparatus at 600ºC, (ii) the Fischer Assay equipment at 550ºC and (iii) the mild steel retorts (capacity 250 lb.) heated electrically in a semi-pilot oven at 600ºC, to determine the l.t.c. Characteristics of these coals. This paper presents and discusses the results of these investigations. It also gives correlation for the estimated yields in full scale narrow continuous vertical retorts installed at the Central Fuel Research Institute
