A quality survey in relation to the structural peculiarity of the potential seams of the Raniganj Measures in ht south-western part (Madhukunda-Poradiha area) of the Raniganj coalfield is presented. The study reveals that there is a significant deterioration of quality as well as maturity of the coal seams from west to east. The bore hole data reveasl that the Dishergarh seam (R-IV) is found to occur at a very shallow depth around bore hole No. RN-14, thereby indicating a probable outcrop of ironstone shales (Barren Measures) adjacent to this bore hole, and the Barakar Measure rocks are also expected within approachable depth around this bore hole in the area.
