Smith, from St. Augustine, Fla., was a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and led the Battle of First Manassas. In January 1863 he was given the command of the whole Trans-Mississippi west, Arkansas, western Louisiana, and Texas region. Beauregard was from Louisiana and a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He commanded the defenses of Charleston, South Carolina, for the Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, and won the First Battle of Bull Run near Manassas, Virginia
