Identifying climate risks and assessing differential vulnerability of communities in Ahmednagar and Aurangabad districts of Maharashtra

This series is based on work funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) through the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA).This study provides an example of how agricultural practices in rural Maharashtra are being transformed in response to changing climate and additional stresses brought on by non-climatic factors. It attempts to understand vulnerability in the context of social differentiation including gender, in selected villages in two districts in Maharashtra state. Through community engagement and use of the Community Driven Vulnerability Evaluation-Program designer tool (CoDriVE-PD) a fast and detailed assessment of climate risks and vulnerabilities can be made. Better understanding is needed to help design policies for adaptation and mitigation, while also designing projects that build adaptive capacities. Many of India’s drought-prone districts are in Maharashtra
