In South Africa the emergence of informal settlements was inextricably linked to race-based urban policies, in which housing played a vital role. This case study aimed to ascertain the level of social cohesion, inclusivity and livelihood in the resettled community of Mt Moriah, and highlights some socio-political and technical conditions that militate against these factors. Researchers conclude that Mt Moriah was fairly successful in producing a sense of belonging for the resettled community, but residents remain economically vulnerable. Issues relating to quality of life and the deterioration of basic infrastructure can only be resolved through building a cohesive political voice
