Study to assess environmental education needs of the urban communities in Tanzania using the community based approach : the case of Mbagala and Vingunguti communities in Dar es Salaam; final research report

This study was undertaken on the understanding that as urban areas become more populous and their resources decrease, environmental problems such as waste disposal, sanitation, water supply, drainage, housing and soil erosion and urban poverty are increasingly becoming evident. In order to understand, appreciate and alleviate increasing complex urban environmental problems, appropriate environmental education (EE) programmes are needed. This study employed a community based approach to assess environmental education needs of two communities in the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The study found out that although urban communities have similar environmental problems, priorities for environmental education programmes are different for each community. This study advocates a community based approach to environmental education, which increases opportunities for the communities to make decisions regarding their EE activities for the betterment of their lives
