This policy brief is based on results of a large-scale survey, and suggests specific policy recommendations that acknowledge the vulnerability of migrant women. Internal migration in India is widespread involving huge numbers of people, the majority being women, who move for familial and economic reasons. Due to the way ‘internal migrants’ are defined in official data, figures exclude many who migrate on a temporary basis. As well, the design of data results in an incomplete picture of the motivations of women who move and change residences, resulting in an underestimation of the full scale of economic and in particular, temporary migration
